When Porn or Hollywood are your sex educators, it can get confusing when things don’t work that way for us!

Clare and Janet mine the myriad of contradictions in partnered sex.

The Arousal Paradox
This podcast contains explicit language and content of a sexual nature.
In this episode, Clare and Janet unpack what they jokingly call the arousal paradox - the confusing, frustrating and very common mismatch between what we think should turn us on and what actually does.
They explore why so many of us measure our arousal against unrealistic Hollywood scripts or porn narratives, and how this creates anxiety when real-life desire doesn’t follow the same plot. From mismatched libidos to the myth of “the normal one”, they reveal why partners can feel out of sync and how that misunderstanding can spiral into shame, self-blame or conflict.
Drawing on clinical experience, they dig into the “story behind the plot” - the biological, psychological and relational factors that shape arousal. Clare and Janet explain spontaneous vs responsive desire, the impact of stress, medication and انقطاع الطمث, and why conditions like environment, timing, mood and communication matter far more than we’re taught to believe.
They also introduce concepts from sex science, including accelerators and brakes, and share everyday examples of exciters and “icks” that influence how desire rises and falls. Above all, they highlight a reassuring truth: most couples aren’t mismatched — just different. And understanding those differences is the starting point for better sex, less pressure and more connection.
