Taking omeprazole and Viagra (sildenafil) together is generally considered safe. There is no evidence that omeprazole significantly changes how much Viagra is absorbed into your body or how quickly it is cleared from your system. There are also no known 'additive' effects where the two drugs would dangerously increase each other's side effects.
Why this happens
Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces stomach acid, and Viagra is a PDE5 inhibitor. While some drugs that change stomach acidity can affect how other medicines are absorbed, studies have shown that omeprazole does not have a meaningful impact on the way the body processes sildenafil. Both drugs are processed by the liver, but they use different pathways (enzymes) and do not interfere with one another.
What you should do
You can take these two medications together. You do not need to change the timing of your doses or the amount you take. However, as with any medication, if you notice any unusual side effects like severe dizziness, chest pain, or a very long-lasting erection, you should seek medical advice.
Important precautions
Heart conditions and Nitrates
Never take Viagra if you use nitrate medicines (like glyceryl trinitrate or isosorbide mononitrate) for chest pain or heart failure. Combining them can cause a sudden, life-threatening drop in blood pressure.
Severe diarrhoea
Contact your doctor immediately if you develop severe or persistent watery diarrhoea, as omeprazole can increase the risk of a serious bowel infection called Clostridium difficile.
Vitamin B12 deficiency
Long-term use of omeprazole can prevent your body from absorbing Vitamin B12 properly, which may lead to nerve damage or anaemia.
Lupus (SLE)
Seek medical advice if you develop a skin rash, especially in areas exposed to the sun, as omeprazole can trigger or worsen a rare autoimmune condition called Subacute Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus.
Priapism - Viagra
If you experience an erection that lasts for more than 4 hours, seek immediate medical attention. Delaying treatment can cause permanent damage to the penis.
Food and drink warnings
Alcohol
It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol when taking Viagra. Alcohol can make it harder to get an erection and may increase the risk of side effects like dizziness, headaches, and low blood pressure.
It is best to avoid or strictly limit alcohol while taking omeprazole. Alcohol can increase the amount of acid your stomach produces, which may worsen your symptoms or make the medicine less effective. Additionally, both alcohol and omeprazole can irritate the stomach lining.
Grapefruit juice
Avoid drinking large amounts of grapefruit juice. It can increase the level of Viagra in your blood, which makes side effects more likely.
General Food Timing
Omeprazole works best if you take it 30 to 60 minutes before a meal, preferably breakfast. Taking it with food can slow down how quickly the medicine starts to work.
High-fat meals
If you take Viagra with a heavy or high-fat meal (such as a cheeseburger and chips), the medicine may take longer to start working. For the fastest effect, it is best taken on an empty stomach or with a light meal.

Taking Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and insulin together significantly increases your risk of having a 'hypo' (hypoglycaemia), which is when your blood sugar levels drop too low. Symptoms of a hypo can include feeling shaky, sweaty, dizzy, hungry, or confused. In severe cases, it can be dangerous.

Can I take Naproxen and Tramadol together?
Taking naproxen and tramadol together can increase the risk of serious side effects, particularly affecting your stomach and kidneys. However, these two medicines are often prescribed together for short-term pain relief under medical supervision.
