Can I take Atorvastatin and Prednisolone together?

You can usually take atorvastatin and بريدنيزولون together, but with caution. Taking them together may increase the risk of muscle-related side effects, such as muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness.

Both medications can independently cause muscle toxicity (myopathy). When used together, these effects can add up (an additive effect).

Furthermore, prednisolone is a corticosteroid that can increase glucose production and insulin resistance, potentially counteracting some of the cardiovascular benefits of the statin.

Report any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness to your doctor immediately, especially if you also feel generally unwell or have dark-coloured urine.

If you have diabetes, you should monitor your blood sugar levels more closely while taking prednisolone.

You must not take atorvastatin if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as it can cause serious harm to an unborn baby. Use effective contraception while taking this medicine.

Muscle disorders - atorvastatin

Seek immediate medical advice if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness. In rare cases, this can lead to a serious condition called rhabdomyolysis which causes kidney damage.

Infection exposure

Avoid contact with anyone who has chickenpox, shingles, or measles. These infections can be life-threatening while taking steroids; seek urgent medical advice if you are exposed.

Grapefruit juice contains compounds that can increase the level of atorvastatin in your blood. This may increase your risk of side effects, such as muscle pain or damage. Avoid drinking large quantities (more than 1.2 litres per day), though it is safest to avoid it altogether or keep intake to very small amounts.

While alcohol does not directly interact with atorvastatin, drinking large amounts of alcohol can increase the risk of liver problems and muscle side effects. It is best to keep your intake within the recommended limits (no more than 14 units per week).

General Diet (Salt and Sugar)

Prednisolone can cause your body to retain salt and water, and it can also increase your blood sugar levels. You may be advised to reduce your intake of salt and sugary foods while taking this medicine.
